Don't trust the corporates.
You wouldn't expect big corporate fitness apps to sell data to shady brokers, but they do. Big corporate fitness doesn't give a shit about you. It uses your data as another way to make money and it doesn't care who it sells to.

What actually changes hands, according to the apps' own disclosures, is coarse location, device IDs and app interactions — and at some apps, health and fitness information itself. Advertising is the routine destination. Incogni's summary of where it goes next: shared data “ends up in the hands of third-party companies, which can include data brokers, and can subsequently be sold to hedge funds, insurance companies, advertisers, and government agencies.” That last one is not hypothetical. Reading a declassified report commissioned by the Director of National Intelligence, the Brennan Center found that agencies including the FBI, the IRS, the DEA, the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security “have secretly been paying data brokers to access vast databases of personal information, including geolocation data, without any warrant, court order, or even subpoena.” That is location data broadly — nobody has traced it to a fitness app specifically, and we are not going to draw that line for you. Your “free” fitness app still costs you your privacy.
